Hours of operation: Memorial Day through Labor Day; open from 9 a.m.-9 p.m.; other months by appointment with the beach manager (203) 467-9537

Cost: $2 per person for non-residents under 12 years old; $3 per person for residents over 12 years old; $8 per carload of up to eight people if you’re a resident or non-resident over 16 years old (ages 15 and under are free). If you’re going in July and August expect crowds on weekends and holidays because that’s when most people go swimming at beaches.

The beach has bathrooms, picnic tables, lifeguards on duty during peak hours (10 am to 5 pm), and food vendors nearby — everything you’d expect from a public beach! 6. Farm River State Park
