Introduction
West Memphis is one of the most underrated cities in Arkansas. It has beautiful scenery, many museums and parks, and great restaurants. Here are a few of my favorite things to do in West Memphis:
Southland Grey Hound Park
Southland Greyhound Park is the perfect place to spend a day with your family and friends. Located on Airport Rd, Southland is open every day except Sundays from 12 noon until 10:00 PM. They have a wide variety of tickets available, including $5 walk-around admission, a $20 package deal that includes one dollar hot dog and pops, and $2 for children under 3 years old; general admission tickets can be purchased as well but are only good after 6 PM on weekends when there are performances scheduled.
Southland Greyhound Park is located only a few miles down the road from West Memphis so it’s easy to access for those who live in town or close by. There’s plenty to do here too! For example, you can enjoy watching dogs race around the track when they don’t have special events going on at Southland (which happens quite often). There are also other fun activities such as arcade games where kids can win prizes if they’re lucky enough!
If you’re looking for an activity where everyone will have an opportunity to participate then this might be just what you need because not only do adults get involved but children do too!
Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis
The Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis is one of the most impressive museums in West Memphis, and it’s easy to take for granted. I mean, who would expect anything less than an incredible museum from a bank? You can find this treasure trove at 1515 Market Street in downtown West Memphis—just look for the large building with pillars and flags out front! The museum is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, but if you’d like to visit outside those hours, just call (870) 206-8262 to make an appointment.
The museum has free admission for everyone! No matter who you are or what your background is, this place will be able to teach you something new about yourself as well as our world and universe at large. It’s full of interactive exhibits explaining how things work around here—and if that sounds boring or confusing because you’ve never been inside a bank before…you’re going to love it! There are lots of fun gadgets and games throughout the building that’ll keep kids entertained while giving them valuable experience using the money within an educational environment
Front Street Grill
The Front Street Grill is one of the best places to go for some great food and music. Located on Front Street overlooking the Mississippi River, this restaurant has been serving delicious meals since 1996. The menu includes everything from ribs and steaks to chicken or salmon salad sandwiches. You can also get salads, burgers, pasta dishes, and more if you’re not feeling like eating meat.
If you’re hungry for something different than just a regular hamburger or steak dinner, check out their specials on Wednesday nights from 5 p.m.-9 p.m., Thursday nights from 5 p.m.-9 p.m., Friday nights from 5 p.m.-10:30 p.m., Saturday nights 6:00 p-10:30p & Sunday Brunch 10a-2:30p!
Big River Crossing
Big River Crossing is a pedestrian and bike trail that spans the Mississippi River. It stretches from West Memphis to Memphis, making it a great place to enjoy the outdoors, watch the river traffic and take in the views.
If you’re looking for something more active than simply walking or biking, Big River Crossing offers plenty of opportunities for those too. You can play disc golf or mini golf at two different locations along this trail!
E B Woods Sr Centennial Park
E B Woods Sr Centennial Park is located on the Arkansas River in West Memphis. The park has a walking trail, playground, and picnic area. It’s open from dawn to dusk and is free of charge!
The Flying Fish
When it comes to seafood, shrimp, and fresh fish, The Flying Fish is the place to go. Located at the corner of Front Street and Riverside Drive, this restaurant serves lunch and dinner daily. Their dinner entrees are $12-$20 and include seafood such as shrimp scampi and trout almondine.
They also have steak, pasta dishes, sandwiches (like their famous blackened alligator), a full bar with a wide selection of wines from around the world as well as domestic brews on tap or by bottle/can/bottle service in addition to cocktails that are sure to please even the most discerning palates!
Riverview Park
Riverview Park is a great place to take the family. It has playgrounds, picnic areas, and walking trails. You can watch canoeing while your kids play on the playground.
Tom Lee Park
Tom Lee Park is a beautiful, tranquil place to relax on the Arkansas River. It can be accessed by taking Exit 3 on I-40 and following signs to Riverside Drive/Tom Lee Park. Once you reach the park, head to the northwest section of it where you’ll find a boat launch. This is your best bet for getting out onto the water, but there are also several trails in this area that lead up into Mounds State Park where there’s even more to explore!
You’ll find plenty of opportunities here for fishing or boating, as well as hiking along one of several walking paths. If you prefer not to get wet while exploring, then spend some time checking out their museum which houses artifacts from Native Americans who lived along this part of town years ago!
Looney River Bicycle Trail
The Looney River Bicycle Trail is a family-friendly bike trail that runs along the south side of the Looney River. It’s ideal for beginners and experienced bikers alike, and even better if you have kids in tow. The distance between each section of the trail is just over one mile, so it’s easy to do multiple laps around without getting bored or tired.
The trail is open year-round, but be sure to bring plenty of water and sunscreen as there aren’t any shade trees along the route. You’ll want to park your car at either end (Southside Middle School or Riverside Cemetery), then walk across E Broadway Street until you come upon the path on your left-hand side at Patterson Street & 3rd Street North West Memphis Arkansas 72301
Mud Island River Park
Mud Island River Park is a great place to spend an afternoon with the kids. This free-to-enter park has something for everybody! Some activities have an additional cost, but they are still reasonably priced. You can ride the ferry or take a scenic walk around the area. There is also a Mississippi River Museum, Civil War Museum, and Memphis Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum which are all worth checking out as well!
Memphis Zoo and Aquarium
Memphis Zoo is the largest zoo in Tennessee and is also home to one of the largest aquariums in America. The zoo is open year-round and has more than 2,000 animals on display. They also have an indoor rainforest, which is home to over 500 different species of tropical plants and animals as well as a tropical endangered species exhibit. It’s fun for all ages!
The Memphis Zoo & Aquarium currently has more than 700 animals representing over 150 species—including tigers, elephants, cheetahs, and monkeys—all housed indoors or in climate-controlled habitats (including an indoor rainforest).
Greenbelt Park
Greenbelt Park, located at 1701 Riverside Dr. West Memphis, AR 72301 is a great place to start any trip to West Memphis. A short drive from Downtown West Memphis, it is home to the Buffalo River and two lakes: Black Bayou Lake and Round Lake. These lakes are excellent for fishing or kayaking! Whether you want to bring your boat or rent one from the park staff, there are lots of options for having fun on these waters.
Since Greenbelt Park also has hiking trails within its borders, it’s a great spot for enjoying nature in general as well as water-based activities. You could spend all day exploring this park and then come back later when you’re ready for dinner! There are plenty of places nearby where you can grab some grub like Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen (2480 North Service Road) or KFC (2600 North Service Road).
Dixon Gallery and Gardens
- Dixon Gallery and Gardens
Located in the U of M art building, this museum boasts a collection of over 5,000 objects that are displayed in the main building, the former home of Memphis cotton merchant Walter B. Dixon. The permanent collection includes works by Rene Magritte, Renoir, and Matisse. The grounds also feature a sculpture garden with pieces from renowned artists such as Henry Moore and Auguste Rodin.
- A Taste Of Downtown West Memphis (ATDWM) Food Truck Festival
Taking place on Friday evenings at 6 p.m., this event features local food trucks offering their unique fare to hungry attendees who also have access to live music featured that night as well as face painting and balloon artistry for kids.
